How to read all emails on Gmail

I'm Alec. I built Gmail Unsubscribe, which 104,000 people have installed, so I spend a lot of time looking at inboxes with five-figure unread counts. Almost everyone who asks how to read all their email is really asking one of two things: where the rest of my mail is hiding, or how to clear a counter that says 12,483 without opening 12,483 messages.

Both have answers, and they take about a minute each. Everything below is for Gmail on the web unless a step says otherwise.

See every message with All Mail

Gmail has no folder called Archive. Anything you archived, plus everything you sent, is in a view called All Mail, and that view is the closest thing to "all my email".

1. Open Gmail in a browser.
2. In the left sidebar, click More to expand the full label list.
3. Click All Mail.

In the Gmail app on Android or iPhone, tap the menu icon in the top left and scroll down to All Mail. Either way you get every message in the account except Spam and Trash, oldest activity to newest, with nothing filtered out by category tabs or by filters that skip the Inbox.

That count is usually a surprise. Archived mail never leaves your account, it just leaves your Inbox, which is why people who archive diligently for five years still fill their storage quota. If that's you, deleting archived emails in Gmail covers what to do with the pile.

Include Spam and Trash with in:anywhere

All Mail deliberately leaves out two places. If you are hunting for a specific message and it isn't turning up, Gmail's filters may have put it somewhere you aren't looking. Type this in the search box:

in:anywhere from:billing@example.com

The in:anywhere operator tells Gmail to search Spam and Trash along with everything else. Use it whenever a message you're sure you received has gone missing, especially receipts and password resets, which Gmail's spam filter gets wrong more often than marketing mail. Read only what's unread

Reading everything is rarely what people actually want. Search is:unread and Gmail shows only the messages you haven't opened, across every label. Narrow it from there:

• is:unread in:inbox for unread mail that made it to the Inbox.
• is:unread category:primary to skip the Promotions and Social tabs.
• is:unread from:jane@example.com for one sender.
• is:unread older_than:1y for the ancient backlog, which is the part worth clearing in bulk.

Working oldest first is usually less painful than newest first, because anything unread for a year has already proven it didn't need you.

Mark every email as read at once

Gmail can apply an action to every message matching a search, not just the 50 on screen, but the link that does it is easy to miss.

1. Search for is:unread, or a narrower version of it from the list above.
2. Tick the checkbox above the message list. That selects the page of results.
3. A line appears above the results offering to select all conversations that match this search. Click it. The count it names is how many messages you are about to touch, so read it.
4. Click the mark as read icon in the toolbar, the open envelope.
5. Confirm when Gmail asks. Large batches take a minute or two and you can keep using Gmail while they run.

One honest warning before you click. There is no batch undo for this. The moment those conversations are read, is:unread stops matching them, so there is no list left to reverse, and Gmail's undo toast lasts only a few seconds. If some of that mail still needs triage, star it or give it a label first, then mark the rest read. On phones, the Gmail app only selects the conversations you tap, so use a desktop browser for the whole-mailbox version. Why your Inbox was never showing everything

Three Gmail behaviors keep mail out of the Inbox view, and each one sends people looking for a missing message:

• Category tabs. Promotions, Social, and Updates are separate tabs, so the Primary view hides most marketing mail by design. Getting rid of promotions in Gmail covers clearing and turning off that tab.

The unread count comes back

Marking 12,000 emails read takes a minute. Two weeks later the counter is in the hundreds again, because the mail keeps arriving, and most of it comes from a short list of senders you signed up to once.

When someone runs their first scan with our extension, it finds about 15 subscription senders on average. Fifteen senders at a few emails a month each is most of a typical unread pile. Our data shows roughly a third of unsubscribe attempts hit senders with no working unsubscribe mechanism at all. No one-click endpoint, no working link, nothing. We tell you which ones failed so you can block those senders instead of assuming you're off the list. Any tool claiming a perfect success rate is hiding the same third.

Where is All Mail in Gmail?

On the web it's in the left sidebar under More. Click More to expand the label list, then click All Mail. In the mobile app, tap the menu icon in the top left and scroll down to it.

Does All Mail include Spam and Trash?

No, those two are excluded. Search in:anywhere to cover them as well.

How do I mark all emails as read in Gmail?

Search is:unread, tick the checkbox above the list, click the link offering to select all conversations that match the search, then click the mark as read icon and confirm. Do it from a desktop browser; the mobile app has no equivalent link.

Can I undo marking everything as read?

Not as a batch. The search that found those messages no longer matches them, so there's nothing left to reverse. Star or label anything you still need to handle before you mark the rest read.

Why does my Inbox show fewer emails than All Mail?

Because archiving, category tabs, and filters set to skip the Inbox all move mail out of that view. None of them delete anything, so it all still sits in All Mail.
